How walk-in tubs differ from traditional baths?

June 14, 2018 by Brandon

Walk in tubs or traditional baths? Is there any difference? Yes, there is. Knowing the difference between the two will help you decide which one is suitable for your needs and your bathroom. Basically, walk-in tubs are used for the same purpose as a regular bathtub; however, they are designed differently to provide users a safer and more comfortable bathing experience.

Here are common differences between the two:

  • Designed to help people with disabilities or mobility issues.
Walk in tubs are made for people who suffer from mobility problems. They are made to help the handicap bath independently and securely.
Most homeowners think that they do need to buy a walk-in tub. They think that adding bathroom accessories like grab bars, bath seats, and alike will solve their problem. Sadly, they are left dismayed and disappointed because they are not a permanent solution at all. Traditional baths even with other safety accessories are not designed for people with disabilities or mobility problems.
  • A swinging U or V shape door.
A regular bathtub height can be 20” or higher depending on the design. This can pose a problem for some people who cannot even lift their legs. However, a walk-tub has a swinging U or V shape door that can easily be opened and closed so you can just walk in or enter safely rather than stepping in and out of the tub. Some models have L-shaped doors for wheelchair users. This will help the bather to easily glide from one seat to another without the help of anyone.
You do not have to worry about leakage because it is tightly sealed and the doors can be configured right or left-hand to meet the user’s needs.
  • Additional safety features
According to Center for Disease Control 2008 study, 80 percent of bathroom injuries are caused by slips and falls. They found out that higher age group, 65 years and above, experience these injuries. Falls can cause hip fractures or a fatal head injury. That is why safety is the key design for walk-in tubs.
What sets the walk-in tub apart and special from regular baths is not only the customize door but also the molded seat that allows the user to sit upright while being submerged in water. It also includes a handlebar that gives stability assistance to the bather, and a non-skid floor to avoid slips.
  • Customize tubs with hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, and chromotherapy
Compared to bathtubs, there are endless therapeutic benefits when you regularly use walk-in tubs. Models with a built-in dual-hydrotherapy feature are proven to help treat illnesses from high blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes, muscle pain, depression to sleep disorder. Additional features such as aromatherapy (fragrances) and chromotherapy (LED lights) also enhance your bathing experience and make it more luxurious without costing a lot.
Whether you are suffering from mobility and stability issues or a parent who wants to do a relaxing activity without going far away, walk-in tubs can cover all your needs.
