A commercial wheelchair lift is a cost-effective solution to make a church, school, office, or other public building accessible for people using handicap mobility devices. Sometimes called a vertical platform lift (VPL), a wheelchair lift provides code-compliant access up to 14” in a variety of configurations and are suitable for indoor or outdoor use.
Business owners gain cost efficiencies by installing a vertical platform lift instead of an elevator or long ramp system. Ramps require 12’’ horizontal travel for every 1’’ vertical travel. For example, a 36’’ rise would require a 36’’ ramp. In addition to taking up significant space, ramps can be fatiguing. A vertical platform lift saves space and is automatically powered.
Vertical platform lifts are acknowledged in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accessibility Guidelines as a means to provide public building access.

Things to consider before you buy commercial wheelchair lifts
Commercial Wheelchair Lift Installation
-
- Lift height: Unenclosed commercial installation must not exceed 60” in travel height. The vertical platform lift can be installed with or without the pit. For pit installation, the measurement must start from the pit’s bottom area up to the upper landing. When the lift is installed in an outdoor space, the pit must have a drain. For a floor-to-floor installation, the measurement starts from the floor to the upper landing.
- There are two On/Off Configurations for the unenclosed VPL platform. You can either choose the Straight Through (which is the most common type) or the 90°/ Adjacent.
- Doors and Gates: All vertical platform lift doors and gates must have a latch side clearance of minimum 18”. However, as in indicated in ANSI A117.1-2009, a greater clearance may need to be provided. In unenclosed commercial wheelchair lift, a traveling gate installed to the platform is required. Electricity-powered doors or gates are required in commercial applications, which do not have the straight through on/off configuration.
- Platform Pathway: The platform pathway must be free from any channels and electrical wire ways. For floor-to-floor travel, headroom clearance must be at a minimum of 80” (2032 mm) travel. Additionally, it is very important that the pathway area should also be properly lit.
- Anchoring: Ensure that the machine base is anchored to the floor. Doors and gates should not be free-standing and must be anchored horizontally and vertically.
- Fascia Wall Requirements: To conform with the ASME code, ensure that the fascia wall that secures the full width and length of the platform is smooth and has no holes. It should be properly installed that it will be able to endure a 125-pound side load over any 4-inch square area. For other fascia wall requirements, secure and understand the local codes of your state.
