What are the Different Types of Ceiling Hoyer Lifts?

Are you living with an elderly with mobility problems at home? Do you have a loved one with disabilities? If yes, then you know fairly well how hard it is to carry or assist them from their bed to their wheelchair or vice versa. How wonderful would it be if there is a device that will give you 90 to 100 percent support! No more back pains for you and, most importantly, accidents will be avoided.

Fortunately, there is an assistive machine that transfers patients with safety and comfort. The ceiling hoyer lift or patient lift is the device you all need!

Types of Ceiling Hoyer Lifts

  • Permanent Ceiling Lift

This type of lift has a permanent motor attached to the overhead track, making it accessible for caregivers whenever they need it. Permanent ceiling lift also has a higher weight capacity than a portable lift and it has a continuous charging track. You do not have to fear if the motor will stop midway because of this function.  Furthermore, caregivers can easily move the patient automatically along the track by an additional motor function.

  • Portable Ceiling Lift

This ceiling lift can be transferred from one track to another by unhooking the lift device and attaching it again to another track. It requires a little bit of work for the caregiver, but you can easily keep it out of sight whenever you no longer need it.

There are two types of motors used for ceiling hoyer lifts, it can either be two- or four-function motor. The two-function motor requires the caregiver to push the patient to move along the track while the four-function motor automatically maneuvers the patient along the ceiling track.

In general, permanent ceiling lifts are commonly used because it is much easier and more versatile.

Ceiling Lift Features:

  • Weight capacity

It is crucial that you choose the right lift that can fully support the weight of the user. The standard weight capacity of ceiling lifts is around 300 to 450 pounds. If the patient exceeds this weight, you can opt to have bariatric ceiling lifts.

  • Lift controls

Controls for the device are usually found on the unit itself, but there are also some advanced lifts that have hand-held controllers for the patients to control it themselves. This gives the patients more freedom and versatility to use.

  • Safety features to look for
  1. An over speed governor makes sure that lifts do not quickly lower.
  2. When your lift loses power, the emergency lowering system allows you to lower down the patient.
  3. Sling attachment mechanism prevents detachments of sling loops.
